Without a doubt you're right in that if you're scrounging ammo from military sources you'd be S.O.L. I've seen and found 30-06 ammo in the garage tool bins and junk drawers of people who swear that they've never owned a gun period (.22LR and 12 Ga. There are alot of boxes of 30-06 ammo sitting in the closets and in the garages of people all around America. Occasional hunters and shooters seem to outnumber the semi-auto military style rifle shooters by quite a bit, so I've seen more 30-06's in my time as a shooter than I have. I know ALOT of hunters who own several 30-06's without owning a single. I don't know about that, to me 30-06 ammo actually seems a little more common if we're talking about finding and buying ammo from civilians and from local stores (Wal-Mart, Academy, Mom and Pop Hunting and Fishing stores near popular outdoor spots) as opposed to finding military surplus ammo or buying it at gun shows or online. For one, availability of the round might be difficult a military cartridge on the other hand is almost always available, one way or the other. The 30.06 is uindisiputably a very powerfull round, it's usefulness in a SHTF situation is questionable. It's obviously better than nothing, but a good SHTF gun it is not. Not to rain on your parade, if you like the gun then by all means get it. The garand with that EBR is UNGODLY awkward looking, i'm sorry but it's just ugly. Also the rifle is attractive, see link below. Add detatchable magazines, composite pistol grip stock, and a $500 price tag and this rifle ranks much higher on the to get list. 308 has comparable ballistics to the 30.06 and is otherwise know as 7.62x51 NATO, a military round. Just to prove i'm not just being overly pessimistic here is my good SHTF rifle Another thing, only $1000? For what you get thats not cheap, if it was $250 that would be a good deal. Secondly, the gun is dated maximum of eight rounds in a clip coupled with a distincive sound that warns everone nearby when you have to reload make for unatractive features.
